Kelsey and Carter’s wedding at The Hutton House in Minneapolis, Minnesota was a study in contrast—modern yet romantic, minimal in its color palette while incredibly intentional in its design. From the sculptural ceremony installation to a candlelit reception filled with greenery, every part of the day felt considered without feeling overdone.

Kelsey wore a gown by Sassi Holford that felt perfectly suited to the rest of the day. The clean silhouette and thoughtful detailing brought a timelessness to a wedding that otherwise embraced more unexpected design choices.
Paired with Carter’s classic black tux, their looks created the same balance we saw throughout the wedding: refined without feeling overly formal and modern without leaning too heavily into trends.
From a photography perspective, that simplicity also photographed beautifully. Against the greenery, architectural elements, and larger-scale installations, their wardrobe allowed the two of them to remain the focus.
A Sculptural Ceremony at The Hutton House
The ceremony immediately set the tone for Kelsey and Carter’s wedding. Oversized sheer, petal-like forms created a sculptural focal point for the space, surrounded by soft white florals and natural greenery by Ergo Floral. The translucent fabric caught the light and moved gently against the surrounding landscape, giving the ceremony an almost art-like quality. It felt modern and unexpected while still maintaining the softness and romance of the day.
Transforming The Hutton House
Inside The Hutton House, the sculptural elements continued into the reception. Suspended fabric and greenery brought dimension overhead, while long tables, black chairs, candlelight, and the black-and-white checkered dance floor created contrast throughout the room. Ergo Floral carried the organic feeling of the ceremony indoors, allowing the design to feel connected from one part of the day to the next.
The Hutton House was an ideal backdrop for it. Its clean, neutral interior gave each design element enough room to make an impact without the space ever feeling overly decorated.
A Modern Wedding Cake by Ink Sweets
Ink Sweets created a wedding cake that felt like another extension of the overall design rather than a separate detail. Its modern approach fit naturally alongside the sculptural florals, monochromatic palette, and more editorial direction of the reception.
Photographing the Wedding on Film
The subtle grain and way film renders light gave the images an organic quality that complemented the design beautifully. It also allowed us to approach the day with a mix of more intentional, editorial frames and the candid moments happening around them. For me, that balance is what makes photographing a wedding like this so interesting. The design gives us an incredible environment to work within, but the photographs ultimately need to be about the people experiencing it.
Portraits at Golden Hour
During the reception, we snuck away with Kelsey and Carter for a few quiet minutes of sunset photos. Stepping outside gave them a chance to slow down together after a full day, while the softer evening light created a completely different feel from their earlier portraits. These are often some of my favorite photographs from a wedding day—less structured, a little more relaxed, and a chance to capture the couple together once the nerves of the ceremony have passed and the celebration is fully underway.
